Nestled at the base of the iconic Acropolis in Athens, the newly opened playground in Ragava Olive Grove, also known as Ragava Park, is a welcome addition for expats and their families seeking a vibrant recreational space in the heart of the city.
Designed as part of the “Adopt Your City” program by the Municipality of Athens and generously funded by the Onassis Foundation, this playground represents a commitment to creating sustainable and family-friendly environments in Athens for both locals and expats alike.
With the invaluable support of the Society for the Environment and Cultural Heritage (ELLET) and the Onassis Foundation, the playground in the olive grove has been transformed into a model recreational area. Utilizing natural materials that harmonize with the environment and honor the historical significance of the site, this playground offers a safe and engaging space for children to play and explore.
Spanning over 2,400 square meters beneath the iconic Acropolis, the playground features a two-level design that caters to children of all ages, including toddlers, school-age kids, and teenagers. The lower level boasts a wooden house, a wooden horse with a carriage for imaginative play, a unique “nest” swing, sensory play areas, and seating for parents. Accessibility is a key focus, with wheelchair-friendly facilities available on the first level.
For older children, the upper level offers a variety of equipment for climbing, balancing, and sliding activities. Additionally, an elevated stage with bleachers in the olive grove clearing provides a space for group games and community events, perfect for expat families looking to connect with the local community.
As expats settle into life in Athens, the opening of the playground beneath the Acropolis marks the beginning of a series of initiatives to enhance recreational spaces across the city. The Municipality of Athens, in collaboration with OPANDA and the Green and Cleaning Services, is dedicated to creating modern, safe, and accessible play areas that cater to the diverse needs of families living in Athens.
Excitement is building for the official launch of the revamped Acropolis playground in the Ragava Olive Grove, promising expats and their families a welcoming and inclusive space to enjoy quality time together in the heart of this historic city.
