The Makrygiannis plot, the site on which the Museum now stands, holds the remnants of daily life and human activities spanning centuries, from the 4th millennium BC to the 12th century AD. Roads, houses, baths, workshops, and tombs paint a vivid picture of the vibrant community that once thrived in this area. The best-preserved remains, dating from late antiquity, offer a glimpse into the past and provide valuable insights into the lives of the people who inhabited this ancient neighbourhood.
While only a portion of the excavated site is currently visible, with the rest preserved beneath a protective fill or removed to make way for construction, the artifacts unearthed during the excavations are a treasure trove of historical significance. Sculptures, vessels, coins, and other artifacts offer a window into the daily life and culture of the ancient Athenians, providing a tangible connection to the past.
In a bold move to showcase these newfound treasures, the Acropolis Museum has opened a new exhibition area dedicated to the findings of the excavations conducted on its foundations. This Excavation Museum houses 1,150 objects that were unveiled to the public on June 26, offering visitors a deeper understanding of the rich history and heritage of the ancient Athenian neighbourhood.
As part of this initiative, the Acropolis Museum has announced a ticket price increase to 20 euros, effective from November onwards. This new pricing structure aims to support the preservation and presentation of the archaeological discoveries beneath the Museum, ensuring that these hidden treasures continue to captivate and educate visitors from around the world.
