Exploring the picturesque Greek villages, one cannot help but pause and admire the beauty of the houses that reflect the aesthetics and culture of each region. Greek architecture seamlessly blends with the natural environment, with houses designed to complement and enhance the beauty of nature. During my trip to Nymfaio in the Florina prefecture, I was captivated by the breathtaking experience. The stone-built houses with light blue windows pay homage to Mount Olympus and overlook Lake Vegoritida. The houses feature thick walls and prominent features reminiscent of ancient defense walls, a technique still used by modern Greeks today. Once a traditional farming village, Nymfaio has been transformed into a stunning tourist destination since the late 90s. The view from the small observatory just before entering Nymfaio’s gate is truly surreal. I was fortunate enough to capture a photo as the moon entered the scene, adding to the overall beauty of the landscape.

Known as the “Bear Village” among children, Nymfaio is home to the environmental preservation organization www.arcturos.gr, established in 1992. Focused on protecting the brown bear and wolf populations in the region, Arcturos is easily accessible from the village via a scenic 15-minute forest walk. I highly recommend this experience. Visitors can book a special group guide in English during quieter times. Nymfaio offers a range of chalets and can accommodate around 300 guests. Stepping through the gate, you’ll feel like you’ve entered a movie set where you’re the protagonist of your own story. Each narrative holds significance in this enchanting place, with the endless skyline views at 1350 meters altitude adding to the magic.
