For every lover of Bach’s music, as well as music in general, the St. Matthew Passion is a “sacred” work, a supreme expression of humanity’s journey towards the divine, a heartfelt and spiritual offering in their purest, sincere, and deepest dimension. This time, the St. Matthew Passion is presented in a semi-staged version, with the element of movement adding another dimension to the perception of the work, making its unparalleled musical meanings more tangible, more dramatic, and perhaps more relevant.
The masterpiece oratorio (1727) by the great Leipzig Cantor is considered one of the most significant compositions in Baroque sacred music. It includes deeply moving arias and profound chorales. Written for soloists, double choir, and double orchestra, with a libretto by the German poet Picander, based mainly on chapters 26 and 27 of the Gospel of Matthew in the Lutheran Bible, as well as the Song of Songs.
