A Collaborative Event for Global Unity and Transformation

Presented by the World Human Forum in collaboration with the 2023 Eleusis European Capital of Culture, this year’s symposion aims to harness Eleusis’ rich heritage to inspire global unity and environmental transformation. Through a series of groundbreaking discussions, experiential workshops, and artistic performances, the symposion seeks to spark personal and social change, positioning Eleusis as a global hub for the cultivation of consciousness and addressing contemporary challenges.

The Theme: “Mysteries of Flourishing”

Tthis year’s theme, “Mysteries of Flourishing”, draws inspiration from the Aristotelian concept of Eudaimonia—human flourishing intertwined with the flourishing of nature, communities, and even democracy. Attendees can expect to hear from distinguished global speakers in the fields of sustainability, education, science, technology, and the arts, as well as explore the ways we can collectively cultivate personal and social change.

Notable speakers include:

  • Anthony Bossis – Clinical psychologist and professor of psychiatry, New York University School of Medicine
  • Chiara Baldini – Researcher of ecstatic practices from primitive culture to modern electronic music
  • Freddy Mutanguha – Director of the Kigali Genocide Memorial
  • John Havens – Executive Director, IEEE Global Initiative on Ethics of Autonomous and Intelligent Systems

Performance Highlight: Ba Wang Bian 霸王鞭 – Ancestral Dialogues

A key highlight of the event is the performance Ba Wang Bian 霸王鞭 – Ancestral Dialogues, which will be hosted at the Open Theatre of the Old Oil Mill in Eleusis on Wednesday, September 25th at 21:00. The performance draws inspiration from the ancient Greek myth of Demeter and Persephone, weaving a tale that masterfully connects the traditions of Ancient Greece and China. Artistic treasures embedded in the traditional culture of the Yunnan region in China, such as the Ba Wang Bian dance, are at risk of extinction. Choreographer and performer Maya Jilan Dong has dedicated her work to bringing renewed attention to these fading stars. The production is curated by Farooq Chaudhry, who will also introduce the performance.
