International Museum Day with free admission and guided tours

Museums with different themes participate in the celebration with guided tours, workshops, and even treasure hunt games.

The Board of the Greek Department of ICOM has chosen the Museum of Modern Greek Culture as the honored institution for 2024, appreciating the scientific and educational work it carries out. The events begin today, Monday. The central event of the celebration will take place on Saturday, May 18, 2024, at 7:00 pm in the Events Hall of the Museum of Modern Greek Culture, located at 10 Areos Street in Athens. On Saturday, May 18, there will be a series of guided tours and other events at the Museum with free admission for the public (registration is required).

The Museum of Modern Greek Culture, which recently inaugurated its new permanent exhibition in Monastiraki, has the great honor of participating in this year’s celebration of the International Museum Day of ICOM with the theme “Museums for Education and Research” as the Honored Museum.

As part of this, the Museum has organized various events for the public from May 13 to 18, 2024, aiming to provide a comprehensive museum experience of education, research, and entertainment.

  • Open Fabric Conservation Workshop (OpenLab)
    An innovative workshop on fabric conservation, part of the MeltOpenLab project, gives visitors the opportunity to witness the conservation process of fabric objects from the museum’s collections.

    Hours: 11:00 am – 12:00 pm, 12:30 pm – 1:30 pm, 2:00 pm – 3:00 pm

  • Treasure Hunt at the Museum
    Educational program at the Museum’s new permanent exhibition for children in the fifth and sixth grades of primary school. Children will actively participate in various activities of discovery, observation, dramatization, and artistic creation, exploring the exhibits and monuments in the museum’s courtyard and experiencing aspects of modern Greek culture firsthand.
    Hours: 9:30 am – 11:00 am, 11:30 am – 1:00 pm
    Up to 30 people per program

The Acropolis Museum will also participate in this year’s International Museum Day on Saturday, May 18, 2024, and Sunday, May 19, 2024, with the following activities:

Saturday, May 18, 2024

On Saturday, May 18, 2024, the Museum will be open from 9:00 am to 8:00 pm with free admission for all visitors. The restaurant on the second floor will be open until midnight (phone reservations 210 9000915).

As on every Saturday morning, visitors can enjoy the thematic presentation “Saturday at the Museum with 20+1 masterpieces.” This is a walk through the museum’s exhibition spaces where myths, legends, beliefs, traditions, historical landmarks, and human stories are transformed into art, creating a unique experiential journey.

The Industrial Gas Museum and the Digital Comics Museum are collaborating to present the exhibition “Comics in the Aquatic Environment” at the Technopolis of the Municipality of Athens from May 17 to May 19, as part of the Comicdom CON Athens festival. Additionally, they are offering educational programs for children and guided tours for adult visitors of the Industrial Gas Museum, all with free admission for everyone. This initiative is an excellent opportunity for fans of comics and industrial culture to discover and enjoy art and creativity in a unique environment.

The Museum of Cycladic Art is participating in the International Museum Day on May 18 with extended opening hours and free admission to the permanent exhibitions and suggested activities for both children and adults. Specifically, on Saturday, May 18, the Museum, the Cycladic Shop, and the Cycladic Café will remain open until 6:00 pm. The theme of this year’s International Museum Day is “Museums for Education and Research,” a topic directly connected to the vision and goals of the Museum of Cycladic Art.
