At most open-air cinemas in Athens, the city remains close enough to hear. At its rooftop cinemas, it becomes part of the view. The Acropolis may rise beyond the screen, apartment buildings frame the auditorium and the evening begins while the last light is still fading over the city.
These five cinemas offer very different ways to watch a film above Athens. Some are established summer cinemas with screenings almost every night, while others present carefully selected films on particular dates. Choose according to the view, the programme and the kind of evening you have in mind.
Cine Paris: For the Classic Acropolis View
Few cinema settings are as closely associated with Athens as Cine Paris. Hidden above a building on Kydathineon Street in Plaka, its terrace looks towards the illuminated Acropolis, which can be difficult to ignore once the film begins.
The cinema first opened in 1920 and later moved to its present location. Following a four-year closure and extensive restoration, it reopened in 2024 with a programme curated by Greek streaming platform and film distributor Cinobo.
The schedule combines new releases, classics, Greek cinema and special screenings. Cine Paris is particularly accessible to international audiences because most screenings are either in English or include English subtitles. Greek films are also presented with English subtitles, although readers should always check the language details for the individual film before booking.

Lais: For Film History Above Gazi
On the roof of the Greek Film Archive, the open-air Lais cinema offers an experience shaped as much by cinema history as by its urban setting. The terrace stands above Iera Odos, close to Kerameikos metro station and the restaurants and nightlife of Gazi.
Lais is a strong choice for viewers interested in restored films, repertory cinema, documentaries and international productions. It also hosts festivals, retrospectives and collaborations with cultural organisations, so its programme can be more varied than that of a conventional commercial cinema.
The setting is distinctly urban rather than scenic. Surrounding buildings and the movement of Gazi remain part of the evening, while the opportunity to watch a carefully selected film at the home of the Greek Film Archive gives the venue its particular appeal.

Vox: For the Energy of Exarchia
Vox has been part of Exarchia since 1938. Its elevated open-air auditorium sits beside Exarchia Square, where the surrounding buildings, conversations and sounds of the neighbourhood can become part of the experience.
That close connection with the streets gives Vox a character quite different from a secluded garden cinema. Its programme often includes European cinema, independent productions and films aimed at an audience interested in more than the largest commercial releases.
Vox is also a good choice when you want to combine a film with dinner or a drink. Exarchia’s cafés, restaurants and bars make it easy to build the screening into a longer evening in the neighbourhood.

Anesis: For a Comfortable Rooftop Night
Above busy Kifisias Avenue in Ambelokipi, Anesis creates a surprisingly relaxed rooftop setting. Director-style chairs, small tables and plants soften the urban surroundings, while the renovated cinema uses modern laser projection and digital sound.
The programme includes current international releases, Greek films, classics and occasional special screenings. The venue also hosts selected theatre, music and comedy events, so visitors should check whether the evening’s listing is a film or another kind of performance.
Anesis does not offer the monumental backdrop of Cine Paris or CineFIX. Its appeal lies in finding a comfortable summer cinema above one of Athens’ busiest avenues, temporarily separated from the traffic below.

CineFIX at EMST: For Panoramic Views and Curated Screenings
Each summer, the National Museum of Contemporary Art Athens (EMST) turns its rooftop terrace into CineFIX. The name recalls the Fix brewery that once occupied the building, while the terrace provides panoramic views across Athens, including the Acropolis.
CineFIX differs from a conventional summer cinema. It is a seasonal museum programme with screenings on selected dates rather than a venue showing commercial films every evening. Its programme can include classic cinema, international arthouse films and thematic series connected to the museum’s wider cultural programme.
The 2026 rooftop season runs from May to September. The programme includes films in several languages, so the museum publishes language and subtitle information separately for each screening. Advance booking is required, even when admission is free.

Before Choosing a Screening
Rooftop cinemas are exposed to the weather, so rain or strong wind can affect a screening. Programmes, screening times and operating periods also change during the season. Check the cinema’s official programme on the day you plan to visit.
International residents should pay particular attention to language information. English-language films are normally screened in English with Greek subtitles, but films in Greek or another language may not include English subtitles. Cine Paris provides particularly clear English-subtitle information, while CineFIX lists the language and subtitles for each event.
It is worth arriving before the film. At Cine Paris and CineFIX, the changing view is part of the evening. At Vox, Lais and Anesis, arriving early gives you time to settle into the venue and explore the surrounding neighbourhood before the lights go down.
