Gemini: IPTO and Serverfarm Partner to Build Hyperscale Data Centers in Greece

A Milestone in Strengthening Greece’s Digital Infrastructure

On December 16, 2024, the Independent Power Transmission Operator (IPTO) of Greece and Serverfarm, a global leader in data center development and operations, announced a new partnership. The two entities signed a Heads of Agreement to establish Gemini, a joint venture focused on developing and operating state-of-the-art, hyperscale-ready data center facilities in Athens and other locations in Greece, utilizing IPTO-owned sites.

This strategic collaboration represents a significant step in advancing Greece’s digital infrastructure while fostering sustainable growth in the data-driven economy.

Leveraging Expertise for a Digital Future

Gemini combines the expertise and resources of two prominent organizations in their respective fields. As a cornerstone of Greece’s energy sector, IPTO plays a crucial role in managing the country’s electricity grid, ensuring stability, and adopting renewable energy solutions. The operator will contribute reliable and sustainable power supply, strategically located sites with access to power and fiber-optic networks, and essential operational resources.

Meanwhile, Serverfarm brings decades of global experience in data center development, advanced design, and operational excellence. Known for its innovative commercial real estate ventures, Serverfarm will ensure that Gemini becomes a reference point for world-class data center services in Greece.

Building Hyperscale-Ready Data Centers

Gemini’s first project will be a hyperscale-ready data center campus in the Greater Athens Area, with a committed power capacity of 130 MW. The venture aims to establish a robust digital ecosystem that meets the growing demands of cloud service providers, content delivery networks, and enterprises.

The data centers will be designed to prioritize energy efficiency, integrating advanced cooling technologies and renewable energy sources to minimize environmental impact. This vision aligns with Gemini’s goal of positioning Athens as a leading digital hub, offering secure, reliable, and low-latency facilities to both national and international clients.

Gemini represents a pivotal initiative to modernize Greece’s digital and energy infrastructure. By providing hyperscale-ready data centers with a focus on sustainability and operational excellence, IPTO and Serverfarm are setting the stage for Greece to emerge as a critical player in the global digital economy.
