Moonlit Marvels: Celebrate Greece’s Heritage Under the August Full Moon

Greece’s August Full Moon Events are back, running from August 9th to 25th, 2024!

The Hellenic Ministry of Culture is hosting its 24th annual August Full Moon event, coordinated by the General Directorate of Antiquities and Cultural Heritage. On the night of August 19th, the public will enjoy free entry to a selection of Archaeological and Historical sites, monuments, and museums across Greece. The event will span 100 sites, with 50 of them featuring additional activities.

This year, the programme has been extended to August 25th. Visitors can look forward to a variety of activities, including concerts, theatre performances, stargazing, and guided tours. These events are organised by the General Directorate of Antiquities and Cultural Heritage and the General Directorate of Restoration, Museums, and Technical Works, in collaboration with local authorities, cultural organisations, and landscape beautification groups.

Special events will shine at the Acropolis Museum, the Archaeological Museum and the Museum of Byzantine Culture in Thessaloniki, as well as the Archaeological Museum of Heraklion in Crete. But that’s not all! Across Greece, other remarkable events will unfold, offering a chance to experience the country’s vibrant cultural scene in stunning, moonlit settings. Don’t miss the opportunity to explore these extraordinary celebrations throughout the country!

Special Events

  • Acropolis Museum: On August the 19th enjoy a free concert by the Hellenic Air Force Band in the Museum’s entrance courtyard at 9 p.m. The performance will feature Greek moon-themed songs, film music, and international melodies. Please note that while the concert is free, general admission fees apply for entry to the Museum’s exhibition galleries.
  • Archaeological Museum and the Museum of Byzantine Culture in Thessaloniki: On August 19th, the group “EvitanDryBreads” will perform a concert at 8 p.m. The museum will be open to the public from 8 p.m. to midnight, with free admission.
  • Archaeological Museum of Heraklion in Crete: On August 21st, the Archaeological Museum of Heraklion will host Martha Frintzila and Takis Farazis in a musical performance titled “Recital – Stories for the Soul” at 9 p.m.; while admission is free, tickets are required and can be obtained in advance here.
