The Greek National Opera has exciting news for opera enthusiasts following the complete sellout of tickets for the initial six performances of Giacomo Puccini’s beloved La Bohème. Four additional performances are set to take place on March 14, 16, 19, and 23, 2025, at the Stavros Niarchos Hall, offering more audiences an opportunity to witness this poignant tale of love and loss.
A Landmark Production
The stage direction for this production of the renowned opera La Bohème carries the signature of Graham Vick – described by the Telegraph as “the man saving opera in Britain.” His masterful interpretation relocates the narrative from 19th-century Paris to 21st-century Athens, delivering a landmark performance in Greek opera history.
The sets and costumes were designed by Richard Hudson, while Giuseppe di Iorio created the evocative lighting. Ron Howell orchestrated the movement, and Katerina Petsatodi was entrusted with reviving the original stage direction, ensuring this production retains its dynamic energy and relevance.
The Story
Set against the backdrop of a frigid Parisian winter, La Bohème intricately weaves the love story between the poet Rodolfo and the seamstress Mimì, capturing the highs and lows of their relationship as it unfolds from their first meeting to Mimì’s tragic demise. Puccini’s music evokes a wealth of emotions—joy, love, and the depths of despair—making it a timeless story that touches the heart.
A Talented Cast
The March performances will feature a remarkable cast of talents. The role of Rodolfo will be brought to life by the promising tenor Konstantinos Klironomos, with the acclaimed soprano Anna Stylianaki stepping into the shoes of Mimì. Internationally celebrated baritone Dimitris Tiliakos will perform as Marcello, and the charismatic Annie Fassea will portray Musetta.
Joining these stars are Marios Sarantidis as Schaunard, Vangelis Maniatis as Benoît, Tassos Apostolou as Colline, and Kostis Rassidakis as Alcindoro. The cast will be rounded out by Thanassis Evangelou as Parpignol, Ioannis Kontellis as the customs sergeant, and Yannis Stamatakis as the customs official.
Under the baton of conductor Konstantinos Terzakis, audiences are in for a treat as the GNO Chorus, led by Agathangelos Georgakatos, and the Children’s Chorus, directed by Konstantina Pitsiakou, deliver powerful choral moments that enhance the overall experience.
