Autumn Escapes in Greece
Greece does not retreat indoors when summer ends. During September and October, the sea can remain warm enough for swimming and kayaking, while milder days make mountain trails, river valleys and longer journeys across the mainland increasingly appealing.
These five organised journeys reveal how varied an active autumn in Greece can be. They range from a quieter exploration of Kythnos and an island journey across Naxos and Santorini to multi-day adventures through Zagori, Meteora and the Peloponnese. Combining outdoor activities with villages, historic sites, local food and regional culture, they offer a more complete way to experience Greece beyond a conventional holiday. The experiences are available through Unlimited Adrenaline, Xpat.gr’s partner for outdoor activities and adventure travel in Greece.

5-Days Hiking Holidays on Kythnos Island

Kythnos offers a quieter Cycladic escape within relatively easy reach of Athens. This five-day programme combines moderate walks with swimming, local food and encounters with the island’s history. The route visits the ancient settlement of Vryokastro, Apokrousi and the narrow sandbar of Kolona, one of Kythnos’s most recognisable coastal settings.
The journey also reaches the island’s less familiar interior. A walk from Loutra climbs towards the Castle of Oria before returning to the village and its thermal springs. In Chora, participants can meet a local potter, while the route between Dryopida and Kanala passes a quieter rural and coastal side of Kythnos that many short visits overlook.
Further walks connect Loutra, the Castle of Oria and Chora, while another day brings together Dryopida, Katafiki Cave and a cooking class devoted to local dishes. Four nights in a traditional guesthouse, return ferry tickets from Athens, island transfers and the listed activities are included. The pottery lesson is available only on departures taking place before the end of September.

Departures: 14 September, 28 September and 12 October 2026
Good to know: Ask the organiser to confirm suitability and activity options for younger children.
Cyclades Islands Multi-Activity Adventure

This seven-day island journey combines the inland character of Naxos with the volcanic scenery of Santorini. On Naxos, the programme follows paths through villages, olive groves and archaeological sites before climbing Mount Zas, the highest point in the Cyclades at 1,004 metres.
The Naxos section moves beyond the island’s beaches to the villages and historic paths of its interior. Depending on ferry times, the first day includes either a walk through Chora and the Venetian Castle or a trail around Chalki. A longer walk connects Kourounochori, the Potamia villages, ancient Kouros statues and Melanes, before the Mount Zas ascent adds a more demanding mountain day.
After travelling to Santorini, the focus shifts to a wine tasting, the caldera path from Fira to Oia, a sunset sailing cruise and the archaeological site of Akrotiri. Ferries, six nights in three-star hotels, island transfers, the scheduled hikes, sailing cruise and wine tour are included. Horse riding, mountain biking and sea kayaking are optional activities at additional cost.
At a glance: 7 days · From €1,690 per person · English, Greek and Spanish
Departures: 20 September and 11 October 2026
Good to know: Some walks cover 9–12 km. Confirm suitability with the organiser when travelling with children.
Hiking Excursion at Zagori and Meteora

This is the most hiking-focused of the five escapes. From Athens, the route travels north to Zagori, where stone villages, arched bridges and demanding mountain paths shape the week. The itinerary includes the Vradeto Steps, the viewpoint at Beloi, a crossing of Vikos Gorge and the ascent from Mikro Papigo to Dragon Lake.
The progression is one of the strengths of the itinerary. Early walks introduce Zagori through Kapesovo, Vradeto and its historic bridges before the route enters the rougher terrain of Vikos Gorge. The climb to Dragon Lake then reaches an alpine setting at about 2,050 metres, followed by a night in the Astraka refuge and a morning descent towards Papigo.
One night is spent in the Astraka Mountain Refuge before the group descends to Papigo and continues to Meteora. The final walk follows paths once used by monks beneath the rock-top monasteries. Although the listing carries an overall easy classification, individual days are described as moderate to challenging, with long distances and substantial elevation. Participants should assess the detailed itinerary rather than relying on the headline rating.
At a glance: 7 days · From €1,290 per person · English and Greek
Departures: 12 September and 10 October 2026
Included: Transport from Athens, six nights’ accommodation, guide, monastery entrance fees and the meals specified in the itinerary.
Wild Mountains and Rivers Adventure

This journey is designed for travellers who prefer variety to a week devoted entirely to hiking. Beginning at Lake Plastira, it combines hydro-biking or kayaking with Meteora, the villages and bridges of Zagori, rafting on the Voidomatis River and the natural pools near Papigo.
The pace changes from day to day. A gentle exploration of Lake Plastira is followed by walking among the monasteries of Meteora and the viewpoints above Vikos Gorge. The programme then moves through the Vradeto Steps and Zagori’s stone bridges before taking to the water on the clear, spring-fed Voidomatis. Optional horse riding or a short walk near Papigo can be added during the free afternoon.
The most adventurous element is a via ferrata above the Aoos River, using bridges, steel ladders and sections of vertical rock. Participants must be at least 16 and comfortable with heights. An alternative hike to the Monastery of Stomio is available for younger travellers and anyone who prefers to remain on the trail. The programme concludes in Athens with a guided walk and visit to the Acropolis.
At a glance: 7-day itinerary · From €1,460 per person · English and Greek
Departure: 18 October 2026
Good to know: The via ferrata has a minimum age of 16. A less exposed alternative is available.
Active & Culture Peloponnese Adventure

The broadest journey in this selection crosses the Peloponnese from its major archaeological sites to its mountains, coast and river valleys. It begins with Mycenae, a wine experience in Nemea and a coastal walk in Nafplio. The following days add Epidaurus, an olive-oil experience, a Mount Taygetos hike and the Byzantine site of Mystras.
Rather than treating culture and outdoor activity as separate parts of the holiday, the itinerary places them within the same daily journey. A coastal walk leads into a visit to Epidaurus, the paths below Taygetos precede Mystras, and the drive through Mani connects tower-house villages, the Caves of Diros and the ancient associations of Cape Tainaron. Wine in Nemea and olive oil in Epidauria add two of the region’s defining products.
The route then turns south through Mani to the Caves of Diros and Cape Tainaron, before heading inland for rafting on the Lousios River. A final walk through the Lousios Gorge connects historic monasteries and ends near Ancient Gortys. Seven nights, private transport, guides, entrance fees and the scheduled activities are included.
At a glance: 8-day itinerary · From €1,730 per person · Minimum age 10 · English and Greek
Departures: 19 September, 10 October and 31 October 2026
Highlights: Hiking, rafting, wine, olive oil, archaeological sites, traditional towns and coastal scenery.
Before You Choose
Autumn conditions can differ considerably between an island coast and a high mountain refuge. Read the complete itinerary carefully and consider the longest walking day, elevation, exposure and required swimming ability, rather than relying only on the activity’s overall difficulty label.
Confirm current availability, what is included, required equipment, room arrangements, insurance provisions and the cancellation policy before booking. Mountain ascents, sailing, kayaking and river activities may be modified when weather or safety conditions require it.
