Summer in Greece is usually measured in islands, ferry tickets and long afternoons by the sea. Yet the warm months are also one of the best times to discover another side of the country: its mountains. Paths that feel cold, distant or difficult for much of the year open up in summer to hikers, families, experienced trekkers and travellers who want to see Greece from above rather than only from the beach. Through Unlimited Adrenaline, Xpat.gr’s trusted partner for outdoor experiences in Greece, this summer brings together a series of guided mountain activities on Parnassus and Olympus, from an easy mythological cave hike near Arachova to demanding summit routes on some of Greece’s most legendary peaks.

1. Hiking at Liakoura, summit of Mount Parnassus

Liakoura is the highest peak of Mount Parnassus, rising to 2,457 metres. It is one of the most atmospheric mountain routes in Central Greece, especially for those who usually associate Parnassus with winter skiing or a day trip to Arachova. According to mythology, the name Liakoura is connected to “Lykoreia,” often translated as “the cry of the wolves”, giving the route a wild and almost mythical character before the hike even begins.
The route begins from the ring road coming from the Fterolakka area of the Parnassos Ski Centre. At first, hikers follow a gentle dirt road before moving onto a trail that crosses open alpine terrain. The landscape is unexpectedly rich, with meadows still grazed by local shepherds, aromatic herbs, birds and rare mountain flowers that survive close to the peaks.
As the hike continues, the rocky terrain becomes more dominant until the group reaches the summit. From there, the view can stretch towards the Euboean Gulf, the Corinthian Gulf and the surrounding peaks of Giona, Vardousia, Oiti, Kallidromo and Helicon. Under ideal conditions, hikers may even see as far as Mount Olympus. This is a difficult hike, best suited to people with good fitness, proper hiking shoes and a real appetite for altitude.

2. Gaia’s Mythical Cave Hiking, Arachova

For a gentler but deeply memorable mountain experience, Gaia’s Mythical Cave Hiking near Arachova is one of the most accessible options in this summer mountain guide. The route leads through a lush fir forest towards the Corycian Cave, also known as Gaia’s Cave or Pan’s Cave, a place closely connected with Greek mythology and the sacred landscape of Parnassus.
The cave was dedicated in antiquity to the god Pan and the Corycian Nymphs. According to the activity description, scientific research has shown that the cave was inhabited from the Neolithic era, with finds dating from the Neolithic to the Classical period. It is also connected to Delphi by an ancient footpath once used by pilgrims, making this hike especially interesting for anyone who wants to combine nature, mythology and ancient Greek history.
The hike starts in Livadi, the altitude plateau above Arachova, and follows an uphill forest road towards the cave. With a total distance of around 6 km and approximately 300 metres of ascent and descent, it is an easy-going route compared with the summit climbs, but proper hiking shoes are still essential. This is a particularly good choice for families with older children, beginners and expats who want a mountain experience without committing to a long or technical route.

3. One-day summit of Mount Olympus by secret path

Mount Olympus is not just another mountain. It is the highest mountain in Greece, the mythical home of the ancient gods and one of the most powerful outdoor experiences in the country. This one-day summit route is designed for hikers who want a demanding mountain challenge without committing to an overnight stay.
The activity starts from Kalivia, Elassona, and continues by 4×4 vehicles along a dirt road towards Christakis Shelter, at an altitude of around 2,400 metres. From there, the route continues on foot through the alpine zone, following the E4 mountaineering path towards Skoli and Kakoskala.
If weather and safety conditions allow, the group continues towards Mytikas, the highest peak of Mount Olympus at 2,918 metres, using the necessary safety equipment. There may also be the option of reaching Skolio, the second-highest peak in Greece, which has easier access. This is a moderate but serious mountain activity, suitable for people with good physical condition, confidence on exposed terrain and no fear of heights.

4. Two-day climbing to Olympus – Mytikas

This two-day Olympus climb is for hikers who want to experience the mountain more slowly and more completely. Instead of rushing the ascent in one long day, the route gives participants time to move from the forested lower slopes to the high alpine landscape, with an overnight stay in one of the mountain refuges.
The activity begins from Litochoro and continues to the forest location of Gortsia, at around 1,100 metres. From there, the group starts the ascent through the route Gortsia – Petrostruga – Plateau of the Muses. The overnight stay takes place at the Giosos Apostolidis refuge, one of the most dramatic places to spend the night on Mount Olympus.
Depending on the weather, the ascent to the peaks may take place on the first afternoon or the following morning. The climb towards Mytikas is done with the necessary safety equipment, including helmet, climbing harness and rope, and always with experienced guides. For those who feel too tired to attempt the summit, there may be alternative options, such as visiting the chapel of Prophet Ilias or simply resting at what feels like one of the highest balconies in Greece.
This is a moderate but demanding mountain experience. It requires good physical condition and is not recommended for people with musculoskeletal problems or for those with fear of heights or acrophobia. The guide may cancel or change the summit attempt if the weather conditions do not allow it, because safety always comes first on Olympus.

5. Mt. Olympus Peak Ascend, 2 days / 1 night

This two-day Mount Olympus ascent follows a classic route for hikers who want to experience the mountain from its lower forest paths to its high, rocky peaks. The programme begins in Litochoro, the gateway town of Olympus, before continuing to Prionia, where the hike starts on the international E4 trail.
On the first day, hikers follow the path from Prionia to the Spilios Agapitos Shelter, at around 2,100 metres. The route takes approximately 3 to 4 hours, passing through a beautiful mountain environment before reaching the refuge. From there, the views towards Litochoro and the Aegean Sea make the overnight stay part of the experience, not just a pause before the summit attempt.
The second day starts very early, with the group setting off towards Skala and, if weather and safety conditions allow, towards Mytikas at 2,918 metres. The ascent to Mytikas requires safety equipment, including helmet, harness and rope. If conditions are not suitable, the guide may choose the route to Skolio, the second-highest peak in Greece, instead.
This is a serious mountain experience for adults. Participants should be ready for an early wake-up, a long second day, changing weather and exposed alpine terrain. It is best suited to hikers with good fitness, proper trekking shoes and respect for the guide’s safety decisions.

Before you book: mountain safety and preparation
Mountain adventures in Greece are beautiful, but they are also weather-dependent. Even in summer, conditions can change quickly at altitude, especially on exposed routes such as Parnassus and Olympus. Before booking, always read the full activity details, check the participation requirements and confirm what is included.
For all routes, proper hiking shoes are essential. Depending on the activity, participants should also bring a small backpack, water bottle, sun protection, waterproof or windproof jacket, snacks and dry clothes for after the hike. For longer Olympus routes, warm layers, a head torch, personal first-aid basics and suitable overnight items may also be needed.
Which mountain activity should you choose?
Families and beginners may prefer Gaia’s Mythical Cave near Arachova. Fit hikers looking for a serious day in the mountains may choose Liakoura or the one-day Olympus summit. More experienced walkers who want the full mountain atmosphere may prefer one of the two-day Olympus routes with an overnight refuge stay.
