At an open-air cinema, Athens is never entirely shut out once the film begins. A motorcycle passes at an unfortunate moment. A neighbour closes the shutters. The scent of night-blooming jasmine mingles with fresh popcorn and mosquito repellent. Above the screen, the sky darkens slowly, unconcerned with the advertised starting time.
The surroundings are as memorable as the film. Canvas director’s chairs are arranged on gravel, usually with small tables between them, while plants grow around the screen and along the walls. In Plaka and Thiseio, the Acropolis remains visible above the rooftops. Along the southern coast, the evening breeze arrives from the Saronic Gulf.
Known in Greece as therina sinema (θερινά σινεμά), these seasonal cinemas have long been part of summer life in Athens.
A short history of Athens’ summer cinemas
Cinema reached Greece in 1896. In 1900, the first regular screenings began in cafés around Syntagma Square, where black-and-white silent films were projected onto a white sheet using makeshift equipment.
Permanent summer cinemas soon followed. Aigli opened in the Zappeion Gardens in 1904, and Dexameni began operating at the foot of Lycabettus in 1905. Cine Paris traces its history to 1920, while Thiseion has shown films on Apostolou Pavlou Street since 1935, apart from an interruption during the German occupation.
The number of open-air cinemas grew rapidly after the Second World War, alongside the expansion of Athens itself. Vacant plots between houses could be converted into cinemas with a screen, a projection booth and several rows of chairs. Each venue served its surrounding neighbourhood and became a summer meeting place, where families, couples and groups of friends gathered for an evening close to home. By 1970, Athens had 542 open-air cinemas. Many subsequently disappeared as the land they occupied was developed for apartment buildings, shops and car parks.
For older generations of Greeks, summer cinemas remained closely bound to memories of youth and evenings spent beneath the night sky. Loukianos Kilaidonis gave that nostalgia its best-known musical expression in Ta Therina Sinema, a song about moonlit screenings and youthful summers that cannot be recovered.
Today, more than 68 open-air cinemas operate across Greater Athens during the summer season. Historic privately run venues coexist with cinemas maintained by local authorities, keeping the tradition alive in the city centre and residential suburbs across the metropolitan area. Cine Paris occupies a rooftop beneath the Acropolis, Riviera is enclosed by the apartment buildings of Exarchia and Cine Akti carries the tradition to Vouliagmeni. Each venue reflects the character of the neighbourhood around it.
Most retain the practical features associated with the traditional summer cinema: a small concession bar, one or two screenings each evening and an interval dividing the film into two parts. Their programmes range from new international releases and Greek productions to restored classics, independent films and children’s animation.

Historic centre and central Athens
The oldest and best-known cinemas are concentrated around the historic centre, Lycabettus and Exarchia. Several can be reached on foot from central metro stations.

Planning your visit
Most cinemas begin their first screening after sunset, with a later performance at venues that run two films each evening. Seating arrangements vary. Arriving early is useful at popular screenings and at cinemas where seats are not numbered.
Summer weather is usually dependable, although wind or rain can alter a programme. Opening and closing dates also vary by venue. The current listings linked above provide the most reliable same-day information.
Public transport works well for cinemas in the centre and along the main avenues. A car or taxi is often more practical for hilltop venues, outer suburbs and parts of the Riviera. Allow additional time for parking near busy coastal districts on summer evenings.
