Following its highly successful performances at the Thessaloniki Concert Hall, this spectacular Chinese production now comes to Athens with breathtaking acrobatics, expressive choreography and striking theatrical imagery.
At its heart is the celebrateddemanding technique, known as the Shoulder Ballet, where the elegance of classical dance meets the precision, strength and suspense of daring acrobatics. SWAN will be presented at the Christmas Theater from 10 to 14 September 2026.
When Ballet Meets Acrobatics
A dancer rises onto her partner’s shoulders and balances there on pointe. It is an image of remarkable grace, but also one that carries an unmistakable sense of danger.
This demanding technique, known as the Shoulder Ballet, provides the inspiration for SWAN. It requires exceptional strength, balance and trust from both performers, bringing together what has been described as “the elegance of ballet and the suspense of acrobatics”.
In SWAN, these feats are part of a complete theatrical narrative rather than a succession of unrelated acrobatic acts. Every balance, fall and recovery contributes to the story unfolding on stage.
A Story of Ambition, Love and Beginning Again
SWAN follows a determined young acrobat who dreams of reaching the highest level of her art. Her journey takes her through demanding training, collaboration, love, disappointment, failure and the decision to begin again.
What begins as one performer’s pursuit of excellence gradually becomes a tribute to everyone who has continued chasing a dream after experiencing doubt or defeat.
The performers communicate this journey principally through movement. Balance, gesture, choreography and physical expression take the place of conventional dialogue, allowing the story to cross language barriers and speak directly to the audience.
This visual approach makes SWAN particularly accessible to Athens’ international community, as well as to families looking for a live performance that different generations can experience together.
The Swan as a Symbol of Renewal
SWAN is a contemporary stage experience filled with symbolism, emotion and dramatic tension.
The swan becomes an image of transformation, hope and renewal, reflecting the central character’s determination to rise after disappointment. It also represents harmony between people and nature.
Every look, balance and carefully controlled movement contributes to that meaning. The most daring sequences express vulnerability and trust as much as physical ability, telling a story of perseverance and transformation without words.
A Dreamlike World of Music and Movement
The musical world of SWAN draws inspiration from Western classical music, including Camille Saint-Saëns’ The Swan and the atmosphere associated with Swan Lake.
Music, choreography, lighting and projected imagery come together to create an immersive environment around the performers. Multiple layers of translucent material and projected images add depth and movement to the world surrounding the acrobats.
The result is a visually rich production in which dance, music, theatre and breathtaking acrobatics become part of the same emotional story.
A Spectacle for All Ages

Suitable for audiences aged five and over, the production runs for approximately two hours. With only eight performances scheduled in Athens, it offers a rare opportunity to experience a major Chinese acrobatic dance production in Greece.
