As the vibrant city of Athens continues to be a melting pot of cultures and ideas, the international community residing here has the unique opportunity to delve into the intersection of art and democracy through a groundbreaking exhibition at the National Gallery – Alexandros Soutsos Museum.

Curated by the visionary director, Syrago Tsiara, the exhibition titled “Democracy” offers a visual “essay” on the critical dimension of democracy as an active stake for contemporary art. Against the backdrop of pivotal elections taking place worldwide, this international showcase marks the 50th anniversary of the restoration of democracy in Greece, Portugal, and Spain, following the collapse of authoritarian regimes.

With 140 works by 55 artists from renowned museums and private collections in collaboration with institutions abroad, “Democracy” presents a comprehensive exploration of the political function of art during the tumultuous decades of the 1960s and 1970s. Through thematic axes such as “The face of the enemy,” “Resistance,” “Uprising,” and “Stimulation,” visitors are invited to reflect on the role of artists in advocating for political freedoms and contributing to the processes of social-political reconciliation post-dictatorship.

This unprecedented exhibition sheds light on the artistic practices born out of the struggle for freedom, offering a comparative perspective on the experiences of Greece, Portugal, and Spain during their transitions to democracy. From acts of resistance to expressions of solidarity, the artworks on display serve as a testament to the enduring legacy of art in challenging oppressive regimes and inspiring societal change.
