For one October afternoon, Marousi will feel a little more Bavarian. The German School Athens (Deutsche Schule Athen) opens its grounds on Saturday, 10 October for its annual Oktoberfest, with cold beer, warm pretzels, sausages, Leberkäse and a programme designed for both adults and children.

Running from 12:00 to 18:00, the celebration brings one of Germany’s most recognisable traditions into the everyday life of Athens. It is organised by the German School Athens together with its Alumni Association and Parents’ Association, drawing families, former pupils, friends of the school and visitors who simply want to spend a relaxed Saturday afternoon over German food and beer.

Beer, pretzels and a taste of Bavaria

The food gives the afternoon much of its character. Sausages are served alongside Leberkäse, a baked meat speciality closely associated with Bavaria and Austria, while large salted pretzels provide the familiar accompaniment to a cold beer.

The setting gives the celebration a different feel from Athens’ larger food and drink festivals. It is rooted in a school community, with long-standing friendships, families and volunteers shaping the day. The programme includes activities for younger visitors as well, making it an easy option for parents looking for a weekend event that works for the whole family.

A German tradition with an Athens identity

For international residents, events like this reveal how much of Athens’ cultural life happens beyond the city centre. International schools, institutes and communities regularly bring their own traditions into the capital, creating occasions where languages, food and customs travel surprisingly well.

Oktoberfest fits naturally into that mix. The original festival in Munich may be famous for enormous beer tents, traditional dress and crowds from around the world, while the Marousi version has a much more local scale. You can arrive at lunchtime, order a beer and something German to eat, meet people around the school grounds and stay for as much of the afternoon as you like.

The community behind the festival

The event depends heavily on volunteers from the German School community. Pupils also take part according to their year group, with younger students selling pretzels and Lebkuchen, older pupils helping with decorations and preparations, and final-year students assisting with the event and sweet stalls.

The money raised supports the school’s scholarship fund for graduating pupils. Every beer, pretzel and plate of food therefore contributes to a programme designed to support students as they complete their school years.

Why it is worth going

If you are new to Athens, Oktoberfest offers the kind of informal setting in which the city often feels easiest to enter. There is no complicated programme to follow and no particular knowledge of German culture required. Come for lunch, try the food, have a beer, bring the children if you have them and spend a few hours in a part of Athens where several communities comfortably overlap.

It is also a good excuse to head north to Marousi for something more distinctive than the usual Saturday café or shopping routine. For anyone missing central European autumn traditions, the combination of beer, pretzels and a lively school courtyard may feel particularly familiar.
